PROBLEMS WE ARE CURRENTLY FACING

  • Inactive mayor’s office millions in debt willing to tax retirees (claims they live here for free), raising income taxes an additional 0.5%, and cutting services (e.g., Christmas Run pool)
  • Mayor’s costly lawsuits and consulting fees (e.g., two EPA-related lawsuits)
  • Too soft with Enviroclean and slumlords
  • Runaway school board (e.g., tax levy increase and raises given to Superintendent and Treasurer)
  • College of Wooster (C.O.W.) doesn’t pay property tax (state exemption)
  • Vacating our streets (Gasche)
  • Not enough transparency in government
  • Absence of public transportation
  • Joblessness + foreclosures = homelessness

I WILL EMPHASIZE LEADERSHIP FOR QUALITY OF LIFE, EQUITY, FAIRNESS, LAW, AND JUSTICE

  • Reduce salaries of Mayor’s Directors of Law ($118,000), Finance ($105,000) and Administration ($90,000) by 30% for Christmas Run pool
  • Active council member sitting at school board meetings
  • Recalling pay raises from Superintendent and Treasurer (special petition)
  • College of Wooster contributing financially in good faith (instead of property tax), such as the recent commitment made by Brown University to pay the city of Providence, Rhode Island, $4,000,000 up front and at least that much every year thereafter for ten years (guaranteed by contract), including a total of $7,900,000 for fiscal year 2013
  • Other examples of similar contributions by private colleges include Boston University, Yale University, University of Scranton, and the University of Pittsburgh
  • Why aren’t Wooster’s elected officials pursuing a similar strategy with the College of Wooster? Kickbacks? Offshore bank accounts?
  • Emergency 1% tax on the billion dollar corporate college’s (C.O.W.) $100,000,000 yearly tuition income if voluntary payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) not made
  • Bed tax for all summer sports camps at “hotel” college (C.O.W.)
  • YouTube live-streaming to improve transparency of public meetings (city council, school board, county commissioners, etc.)
  • Free transport using a publicly funded hybrid vehicle (more if needed) driven by existing municipal employees on a fixed bus route (i.e., no rider fees, minimal gas expense because of hybrid technology, and no additional human resource expenses)
  • Abandoned homes ÷ working poor (homeless) = stabilized property values

MAKE MORAL DECISION TO SIDE WITH PEOPLE, NOT POLLUTERS, SLUMLORDS AND BILLION DOLLAR CORPORATE COLLEGE
